During the month of October Southwood High School had 23 arrest of students due to fighting and threats.
So Black dads got involved.
‘Dads on Duty’ is a volunteer security organization started by a bunch of Black dads concerned about their children’s safety and progression at school.
“We’re dads. We decided the best people who can take care of our kids are who? Are us,” said Michael LaFitte, one of the founders of the group.
The men stand guard on campus, they talk to the kids so everyone feels safer, and they really seem to care about the wellbeing of the youth.
“The school has just been happy, and you can feel it.” Said one student on social media.
“Its like having my uncle around 24/7, my goodness.” Said another.
These Dads boast around 40 men in their group and their numbers keep growing!
The community now wants “Dads on Duty” to start chapters nationwide, to see if that Shreveport magic can be duplicated across the state and maybe even the country.
